The Seat

I saw an old friend today. He was passing through on his way overseas for work. He and I served together back in 2012. That was the last time I saw him. One of the greatest things about the military is those who leave imprints in our life. We literally picked up where we left off.

As we caught up on old memories he thanked me for letting him have a seat on my wild ride called life. I never thought of it that way and I loved it. I laughed and just looked at him wondering why he was thanking me?

As he started to explain I really started to understand his part of the story. We served in a unit where there were crazy stressful times, yet some amazing and unforgettable ones. What we were all able to accomplish as a team was unimaginable. It was probably one of the best times in my career. I loved every minute of it.

My journey definitely had some people that have taken their seats. Some have stayed in it and went along for the ride. Some were ready to ride that roller coaster and may have even screamed a little… in excitement or in fear. Not sure which one 😂.

Some stayed and supported me through the whole ride even with the upside down twists and turns, the up hill and scary as hell down hill rides.

Everyone has had a seat and for those who stayed, I thank you. For those of you who didn’t, I still thank you. You were part of my roller coaster and I was able to learn to not get back on it.

My life has definitely been a wild one for sure. Lots of learning experiences. Lots of emotional and physical lessons. Would I go back and change it? I am not quite sure. I am the person I have become because of those seats that have been filled. Each one had a story to tell. Each one has been part of a chapter in my life.

So, to my dear friend, thank YOU for taking that seat and being a part of my wild ride.

I will always remember the impact we made and how it changed us. It made us realize what mattered the most. I am proud of the person you have become and the impact you are continuing to make. I will have that seat waiting for you when you get back home safe and sound.
