I am honored to share this press release from Moving With The Military announcing a very special America 250 episode featuring Marine Corps Veteran Minnie Whitzel of Salado, Texas.

This story is deeply personal to our community and to me. Minnie is not only a Marine Veteran who served her country for 31 years, she is also the founder of VFW Post 12235 in Salado, Texas. For the past two years, I have had the privilege of serving alongside her, learning from her, and witnessing firsthand the heart she has poured into Veterans, families, and our local community.

This episode is about more than a home makeover. It is about service, sacrifice, dignity, and the power of a community showing up for someone who has spent her life showing up for others.

Please read the full press release below and join us in celebrating Minnie, Moving With The Military, Maria and Patrick Reed, Newrez, and every volunteer and community member who helped make this possible.

When Community Shows Up: What Minnie Whitzel’s Story Means to Salado, Our Veterans, and Me

There are moments when a story becomes bigger than a headline.

This is one of those moments.

The recent announcement from Moving With The Military about Marine Corps Veteran Minnie Whitzel receiving a surprise home makeover is more than a press release. It is a reflection of what service looks like after the uniform comes off. It is a reminder of what community can do when people choose to care. And for those of us who know Minnie, it is deeply personal.

Minnie Whitzel has spent her life serving others. She served our country for 31 years as a Marine. She founded VFW Post 12235 in Salado, Texas. She created a space for Veterans to belong, to gather, to be seen, and to continue serving with purpose.

For the past two years, I have had the privilege of working with Minnie as my VFW commander. I have watched her lead with compassion, determination, and grit. I have seen her build something from the ground up not because it was easy, but because she knew our Veterans needed it.

That is who Minnie is.

She shows up.

She shows up for Veterans in need. She shows up for community events. She shows up for people who feel forgotten. She shows up even when life is heavy, even when she is carrying more than most people know.

And now, the community has shown up for her.

As the incoming commander of VFW Post 12235, this moment means more than I can fully put into words. Minnie has already laid a foundation rooted in service, connection, and purpose. She has helped bring people together in a way that goes far beyond a meeting, a title, or an organization. She has reminded us that Veterans still need mission. They still need community. They still need each other.

This makeover is not just about repairs, furniture, landscaping, or a refreshed home. It is about dignity. It is about honoring someone who has given so much. It is about reminding Minnie that she is not alone.

And it is also a powerful reminder to all of us.

We cannot only celebrate service when it is convenient. We cannot only honor Veterans on holidays, during ceremonies, or when the cameras are rolling. We honor them by showing up in real life. We honor them by building community. We honor them by making sure the people who have carried others are also carried when they need it most.

I have also known Maria Reed and Moving With The Military for almost 10 years, and I can say with my whole heart that the work Maria, Patrick, and their team are doing changes lives.

They do not just renovate homes. They restore hope. They walk into people’s lives with compassion, vision, and purpose. They remind military and Veteran families that their stories matter. They remind communities that we all have the ability to make a difference when we come together.

Maria has created something powerful through Moving With The Military. Her work has reached families across the country, but this one hits close to home. This one is our community. This one is our commander. This one is someone many of us know, respect, and love.

To know Minnie is to understand why this matters.

To know Maria and Patrick is to understand why this work is sacred.

To witness this community come together is to understand that service does not end when the uniform is put away.

It continues in the way we care for one another.

I am extremely honored to know Minnie, Maria, Patrick, and the rest of the Moving With The Military team. I am honored to have served beside Minnie, and I am humbled to step into the role of commander after someone who has given so much of herself to this post and this community.

Minnie’s story is not just about a home makeover.

It is about legacy.

It is about leadership.

It is about what happens when good people come together for the right reasons.

And it is about a community saying, “You have taken care of us. Now let us take care of you.”

The America 250 episode featuring Minnie Whitzel premieres July 2, 2026, on VetStreamTV, YouTube, and Facebook.

May this story remind all of us that community is not just something we talk about.

It is something we build.

It is something we protect.

And it is something we become when we choose to show up for one another.
